Resources for New Students
IT Resources
While most newly purchased laptops will perform adequately, LITS has a few recommendations to help guide your choices during the process of choosing your companion for the next four years.
Want to learn how to keep your new computer more secure? Head on over to the following page: https://my.hamilton.edu/offices/lits/information-security/awareness
Hamilton College has public printers available in most academic buildings. Printing can be achieved by submitting jobs to a dedicated website (web print) or by configuring your Macintosh or Windows computer to print documents directly to the printer.
Hamilton College has secure wireless network access available in all campus buildings and most outdoor areas.
Please note that the installation of a personal wireless access point (Apple Airport Station, wireless router, etc.) is strictly prohibited on campus. These devices interfere with the existing wireless signal and can degrade its performance.
Hamilton College provides students with 300 MB of server storage space, it is usually not enough to backup large video files or photo libraries. LITS recommends that students purchase external drives for the purpose of backing up larger files as well as storage.
Current employees and students can sign up for Microsoft 365 at no charge to use Office on a personally-owned computer (ie, non-Hamilton barcoded). The licenses will remain free as long as you are a current employee or student at Hamilton College.
As of January 30, 2025, please note that changes to the Microsoft licensing only provide the web-based versions of the products. Desktop apps are not available under this new licensing.
To sign up for an account, please visit the Microsoft 365 for Education site.
Official communication from the College will be sent to your Hamilton email. You can optionally setup your Hamilton Gmail account so that emails sent to your Hamilton email address are forwarded to your personal email account. LITS is not responsible for any emails that are lost once forwarded to personal accounts.
