Recycling at Hamilton

Hamilton Recycling Projects

Big Belly Solar Trash Compactor

There are 3 Big Belly Solar Trash Compactor stations located on campus, as follows:

  • Alumni Gymnasium
  • Commons Dining Hall
  • Martin’s Way Bridge (on the K-J side)

These devices use passive solar technology to compact the landfill and recyclable waste streams to increase time between pickups.

Rechargeable Battery Recycling

Non-alkaline rechargeable battery recycling stations are located at Beinecke (near the Mail Center) and the Taylor Science Center Stockroom. Place all rechargeable batteries in the 5-gallon yellow buckets, and they will be recycled through RBRC.

The only batteries that are recyclable are those that are rechargeable.  The two most common varieties include:

  • Lithium-ion (found in laptops and cell phones)
  • Nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride (found in radios and cordless equipment like drills)

Cell phones may be placed in the 5-gallon container in their entirety.  You do not need to remove the battery from cell phones.

The typical Duracell and Energizer alkaline battery types depicted to the right (D, C, AA, AAA and 9-volt varieties) are NOT recyclable!  Please dispose of these batteries in containers marked “LANDFILL”.

Automotive lead-acid batteries should not be collected through this program.  Please contact the Physical Plant if you have a lead-acid battery to recycle.

Ink Jet & Toner Cartridge Recycling

Ink jets from personal printers and toner cartridges from copier machines may both be collected at stations located at Beinecke (near the Mail Center) and the Taylor Science Center Stockroom.  These devices are all recycled through Envirosmart.

Segregate your ink jets or toner cartridges as per the below:
