Snappy Dance Theater

Hamilton College Performing Arts will present Snappy Dance Theater on Saturday, October 21, at 8 p.m. at Wellin Hall in the Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts on the campus of Hamilton College.

Founded in 1997, Snappy Dance Theater, a Boston-based contemporary dance company of seven performers under the artistic direction of Martha Mason, has grown rapidly to become the largest and most active contemporary dance company in Greater Boston. Now in its 10th year, the company has toured 18 states and was chosen as one of three U.S. companies to perform at the "We Love Dance" Festival in Tokyo, Japan, in August 2004.

The collaborative ensemble uses the diverse movement backgrounds of its members to stimulate and inspire audiences by creating an edgy, yet accessible style of dance for audiences of all ages and all backgrounds and, in the process, seeks to widen and change both young people's and adults' perception of dance. Incorporating athletics, gymnastics, circus skills, martial arts, vocal work, theater and dance into a fun-filled evening of meaningful entertainment, Snappy takes the audience on an emotional journey that is humorous, thought provoking, and filled with surprises.

This performance will include selections from "The Temperamental Wobble," a piece inspired by the illustrations of the late Edward Gorey, who is most famous for the opening credits of PBS' "Mystery!" series.

Artistic director Martha Mason grew up in Clinton. After graduating from Clinton High School, she went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude from Mount Holyoke College and has been choreographing and teaching internationally for the past 20 years. She has taught, choreographed and performed in Taiwan, Germany, the former Czechoslovakia, France and Russia as well as New York City and currently in Boston, Mass.

Tickets for Snappy Dance Theater are $18 adult general admission, with discounts for students and senior citizens. All seating is general admission. For tickets or more information, call the box office at 859-4331.
