Chimborazo, highest peak in Ecuador and for a long time believed to be the highest peak in the world. In fact, due to the Earth's bulge at the equator, it is the furthest land from the centre of the planet. It's also mighty steep and long. Volcanic activity has produced a series of lumps or bulges on the side of the mountain, which we have to climb to reach the summit plateau.

Sunset from the refuge the evening before

Jamie and Sam just below our high point. Sunrise is going on behind.

On our way down. Behind us, other climbers continue up. Some also descend, others seem to go nowhere.

Our high point, around 5,800 metres and above the third bulge. Time to go home.
