A thematic course exploring five fundamental features of all biological systems, including structure and function, information flow, energy and matter, interactions, and evolution. Reproduction is a fundamental characteristic of all living things. It allows for the perpetuation of species across generations. Yet, in many organisms, including humans, the reproductive process is complex and often leaves organisms vulnerable. This course emphasizes common cellular and genetic mechanisms across various reproductive strategies, including how biotechnology is used to modify these mechanisms, while more broadly examining how reproduction contributes to the dynamic continuity of life. Topics include asexual and sexual reproduction, inheritance, development, genetic engineering, and reproductive ethics.
