Twenty-five students returned to campus a week early over winter break for the Levitt Leadership Institute, an intensive program designed to help students develop, practice, and employ leadership skills in whatever discipline they pursue. Originally created by Ambassador Prudence Bushnell and Christine Powers, the program is now led by Susan Mason, former Education Studies department director, with subject matter experts and student leaders.

With a passion for thinking creatively and a desire to incite change, 16 students attended the Social Innovations Fellows program hosted by the Levitt Center from Jan. 8 - 12, gaining guidance on their own social innovation projects.

In his first visit to upstate New York, Sam Quinones, author of the critically-acclaimed book Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic, delivered a powerful lecture to the Hamilton community on the story of the opioid epidemic in America. This is a problem that has been plaguing the country for many years, but it recently reached mainstream attention because of the gravity and scope of the epidemic.

Hamilton was well-represented at the 10th annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), held this year at Northeastern University. Risper Kirui ’19, Emily DeJong ‘19, Gerard Pozzi ‘18 and KT Glusac ‘17 were among the more than 1,100 students chosen to attend the prestigious conference. In addition previous CGI U attendees Sharif Shrestha ‘17, Emily Moscowitz ‘16 and Andy Chen ’16 returned this year. All were recipients of Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center funding and/or support.

At the forefront of current foreign policy discussions is the relationship between the United States and Russia. The Levitt Center brought in Dmitry Suslov, deputy director of research at the Council on Foreign Affairs, to discuss that relationship. He delivered a lecture titled “U.S.-Russia Relations Under Trump and Beyond” on the past, present, and future state of U.S.-Russian relations.

Chiedera Onyeoziri ’18 and Gillian Mak ’18 recently returned from Japan where they participated in HELIO (Human Ecology Lab In Osakikamijima). HELIO is an intensive two-week program that brought together 24 changemakers from around the world to help launch the next era in Japanese higher education by co-designing a new Japanese “college”’ in the community of Osakikamijima, Hiroshima.

Professor of Anthropology Chaise LaDousa and Ana Baldrige ’12 recently published an article in Ethos, the journal of the Society for Psychological Anthropology.

His stack of transcripts is 120 pages deep. Erich Wohl ’18 interviewed 16 African American Hamilton alumni about their experiences with race in the workplace for his summer research project.

After taking The American Founding, a history course taught by Douglas Ambrose and Robert Martin, Kyung Noh ’18 began to examine more closely the differences between human and civil rights.
