Aaron Astor '95 with Hamilton's Alternative Spring Break group in Tennessee.

Aaron Astor ’95, an associate professor of history at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., shared his knowledge of the Civil War in Tennessee with a group of Hamilton students volunteering at the Cumberland Trail for their Alternative Spring Break trip on March 24.

Maryville College is a small liberal arts college near Knoxville and the Smoky Mountains.  The Hamilton ASB group is working on construction of the Cumberland Trail, a hiking trail across Tennessee.

Astor received his Ph.D. in history from Northwestern University in 2006 and has been in Tennessee since 2007.  He specializes in 19th century America and the Civil War era in particular, and is writing a book on the Civil War along Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. As part of his preparation and research, he speaks to Alternative Spring Break students about the geography, history and culture of the region.

The Hamilton group was joined by students from Centre College in Kentucky and the University of Illinois, and Astor spoke to a similar group from Boston University, Pitt and Florida International University last week.
