Author, foreign policy expert, and Washington Post columnist Max Boot joined Professors Ty Seidule and Maurice Isserman to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine on Oct. 25.

Christina Romer, a professor of economics at University of California, Berkeley, and former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers under the Obama administration, engaged in a dialogue with Greg Mankiw, a Harvard University professor of economics and former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers under President George W. Bush.

The Hamilton College Common Ground program on income inequality, scheduled for Thursday, March 12, has been canceled. The speakers scheduled to participate in the program have postponed their travel to campus. Hamilton College is working with them to reschedule the program in the fall.

Coming off a dialogue with students and alumni in Washington, D.C., a few weeks ago, Hamilton’s Common Ground series returned to campus on Feb. 12 with a reprise of “Impeachment Pro and Con.” The conversation focused on the recent impeachment proceedings of President Donald Trump.

Hamilton’s Common Ground program ventured to the nation’s capital on Jan. 29 where a dozen students in the Washington, D.C., program and about 20 area alumni area engaged in discussion around impeachment.

As part of its continuing Common Ground series, Hamilton welcomed five experts who presented varying viewpoints in the discussion “Affirmative Action: Support, Critiques, and What’s Lost in the Discussion.”

“My hope is for a discussion that is more light than heat.” That is how Wall Street Journal editorial board member and Manhattan Institute Senior Fellow Jason Riley described his desired outcome for the upcoming Common Ground event, Affirmative Action - Support, Critiques, and What’s Lost in the Discussion. The moderated four-person panel will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel.

As part of its continuing Common Ground speaker series, Hamilton College is presenting three programs this semester that address significant issues in the news and in our daily conversations. All programs are free and open to the public.

Frankly, Isha Parkhi ’21 was there partly for the food, but she was looking also for more than good Indian take-out at her first meeting of a new student group called Bridge. Its ambitious mission is to foster dialogue across political differences. “That’s a great concept, and we need more conversations,” Parkhi says.

The College has received funding to supplement the series by stimulating discussion of pressing social issues across a wide range of subject areas.
